Time Slipping By Days

Yesterday was Joe and Kellye's sixth anniversary. Joe suggested they celebrate this milestone by preparing a Hawaiian meal for their dinner. He drove Kellye to the store to purchase ingredients needed to make Macadamia Encrusted Chicken and Fruit Pilaf, recipes chosen from her favorite cookbook from the Hali'imaili restaurant on the island of Maui. After numerous ingredients were chopped to perfection, dinner was served at 10pm. Kellye called me at 11pm to tell me Joe loved the meal and that her wedding dress had arrived, would I meet her to choose her shoes the next day.

Arriving at DSW first, I was so surprised to see my daughter struggling to carry in a large, flat shipping box. "Mom, I have to match the dress to the shoes!" I was not surprised at all to see her remove from the box a simple cotton strapless short dress with underskirt. Perfectly perfect for a young girl getting married on a beach.

When she stepped into her dress right there in the store, pulling off her first layer of clothes and slipping her gold lacquered toes into her strapy sandals, I wasn't surprised at all to see her give a twirl in front of the full length mirror. Of course my Twirly Swirly Girl had found a twirly swirly dress!

As she fell into my arms to thank me for her dress and shoes, I was awash with the knowing that these are our Time Slipping By Days. The very days at the end of one chapter of a life just before the beginning of a new one. You can already see the moments as they will be recalled in the future. They are swift and fleeting, and oh so tenderly sweet. You are not able to hold on to them to make them last because everyone knows the next chapter will be even better than what came before.

What a joy to read this post. I remember the first time I saw my daughter trying her wedding dress. I was overwhelmed with so much emotion that it totally surprised me. Kellye's dress is sooooo pretty (I love the huge flower) and the shoes will look smashing. If the wedding is to take place right on the beach she might be better bare-footed...hard to navigate the sand in heels.
These days leading to a new chapter in your child's life are bittersweet. Enjoy this time.
Making one of your felt figures is on my "bucket list" of things to do. I love your clock faces!
Have a happy week!

We have been having SO many of those moments lately! The oldest daughter getting married...the middle one graduating from college and moving far, far away all on her own...the youngest one graduating from high school and preparing to go off to college this fall. Yes indeed, "time slipping by moments." I love the way you think.

HI Elizabeth,
Such a touching moment for you. My husband and I are on pins and needles right now. Our son's wife is in labor, still at home, and we're waiting for the call to go to the hospital. I can't stand it!

Goodness, I would just love to sit down with you and craft E. I miss our chats, but my mom is still in the hospital and I spend up to 4 hours there each day keeping her company, plus going out to her house to remove papers, trash, etc. She lives about 20 minutes away from me, and it's hard for me to drive distances, but it needs to be done.

I can just picture your TSG by your words, and I'm sure there were a few tears in your eyes while watching her. She's going to be a vision, that's for sure.

God Bless
Meri

What a nice story, thank you. It reminded me of my wedding in Hawaii thirty years ago this August.

I like that phrase... "Time Slipping by Days." I have so many of these with my three young adult children and this is a perfect label for this period in my life with them. Lovely dress & shoes & even lovelier story!
PS--there's a vintage wedding card with bluebirds on my blog today--thought you might like to download the image!

this is such a lovely story. TWG's dress is beautiful and the shoes are perfect!
I have one son, but I think that recently he may have met "the one" - I have my fingers crossed. I think of your stories about your daughter and hope my son finds that same kind of happiness.
