The Cheese Couple

When my children were in grade school, I wanted a job that would accommodate their schedule. I found such a job as a Video Clerk in the grocery store of our town. Peculiar to this particular store, the majority of individuals who shopped there were well past retirement age.

It was the "dream job" for me as I am passionate about movies, and I love to converse with anyone who happens my way.  We were encouraged to stop and ask our older clientele about their day and shopping needs. ( Magpie-Ethel )

One day, as I was passing through the delicatessen section of our store, I noticed the cutest elderly couple both pushing their shopping cart. I thought it was the sweetest thing I had ever seen and hoped in my thoughts that my husband and myself would be spotted by someone in this way long days into our future.

I heard the woman say to her husband as they passed the cheese case, "Get us some cheese, I'll meet you in Dairy." She left her husband looking questioningly at all the different varieties. (Jenn B. $15)

Moments later he returned to his wife, cheese in hand. She was not a happy customer at all. "This isn't the cheese we get. We've been buying the the same cheese for 40 years. What's the matter with you! Go get the right cheese!" My heart sank to my knees.  I told my husband when I returned home from work, "Please don't let us ever become The Cheese Couple"

Away at my daughter's these last few days, I returned home to unexpectedly find the door leading from our garage into our house locked. I heard my husband's voice from within, "I'll be right there!".  As I waited my arms filled to the brim, I couldn't believe that my husband opened the door and turned right around to return to his comfortable seat he had left without so much as a "How do you do?". I was not a happy customer!

I went about putting my things away without uttering a word. I went to my craft room to make my Cute as Can Be St. Patrick's Day character, still not a word. My husband entered the room. "The Cheese Couple." he said as he slipped his arm around my shoulder and leaned in for a kiss.

It saddens me when I hear husband or wife speaking sharply (no one says sharply anymore) to the other. David & I have had the words "in sickness and in health" driven home to us these past months and we've made sure to be extra kind to each other.
On another note, your St. Patrick's day people are so cute! Believe it or not, even with the last name of Gleason, I don't have any decorations for the day.

What a great story! It just shows what a good marriage you two have that he realized his mistake. And that you forgave him. (You did, didn't you?:)

Thank you for this. We have become the "cheese couple" all too often in our marriage of 18 years. I will remember this precious story and share it with my man.

We had a cheese couple moment earlier this week. So glad that the cheese couple didn't stay long though. Darling St. Patty's decorations.

Can you imagine 40 years of the same cheese? How boring is that? Poor guy he probably just wanted to try something new! What a nice fella you have Elizabeth! .....Patti M : )

ah how sweet!! I love your stories and the wonderful way you talk about your sweet hubbie. When I was still able to work, the ladies I worked with all complained daily it seemed to me, I never said a bad word about my hubby and always bragged that he is able to fix whatever I have broken, never had to hire a handyman, repairman, plumber, electrian, and he called me everyday I worked when his alarm went off to see if I had made the over a hour drive to work ok and to tell me he loves me and to have a good day! I don't want to be the cheese couple either!
Your st. Patrick's day characters are too cute for words!
Hugs,

I bet it did break your heart. Sometimes we don't mean to but the littlest things can hurt the ones we love so much. But your husband sounds like one sweet heart! No "Cheese Couple" to be found at your house. Thanks for a beautiful reminder to try your best to be kind and considerate to others! Have a wonderful day, Holly

btw:I love the little Irish lassie, she's a cutie :)
