The Silvers

The Silvers were the family that lived in the new house next to my new house in our Camelot subdivision. Side by Side professionals protective of their newly acquired status on the rungs to success, polite hellos the only interaction. The Silvers were Jewish, The Keilys, Catholic.

Adult explanations made little sense as to why the matching boy and girl in the Silver family could not play with my brother and me on Saturdays, or us with them on Sundays. My interpretation to my two-year-old brother was that the Silvers had to wake up early and couldn't play with us.

Impossibly long weeks would go by with only glimpses of the Silver children captured the moment my teeter totter flattened at the peak of our connecting fence. And then one day there was Mrs. Silver, matching children in hand, at our front door. "May I speak with your mother?"

It seemed Mrs. Silver was at her wits end. "We don't mind that your little boy wakes us up at the crack of dawn each morning by crowing like a rooster underneath our bedroom window, but Sundays are our only day to sleep in!" My parents had no idea John was not only escaping from his crib, but exiting our house by the sliding glass door and unlatching our connecting fence!

A shared laugh told to husbands over dinner was all that was needed for the families to see they shared more things in common than not. Fast friends every day of the week, Saturdays and Sundays to worship the same God.

Your little ducks are adorable, Elizabeth! It is hard to put together the brother you talk about as an adult with the little scamp who would escape.

Such a cute story! It reminds me of the youngest member of the movie Please Don't Eat the Daisies with Doris Day and Peter Niven, and Doris's character explains why the baby is locked up in a "cell"-a covered playpen: "Could you unlock a door when you were a baby? Well, he can."

My little boy Greg was an escape artist as well. He could open any lock. I lost him one day...one terrible day. But all ended well. I will have to make a blog post with the story. Thank you for your wonderful tale! Such memories your stories bring to mind!

I'd say we are all lucky that dare devil baby brother of yours lived to adulthood so you can continue to regale us with the hysterical stories of his past and present!
