Lake Ann

Of all the craft room characters I make, my "little" pom pom birds are my very favorite. This fall feathered friend tells the story of my very first home as a new bride in Lake Ann, Michigan, whose claim to fame was a tornado touching down in the center of town, and a sighting of Big Foot.

Being a city girl from Washington, DC where such things didn't happen, I always kept one eye on the sky and one eye on the woods that passed by my car window while driving through town. Lake Ann consisted of a bait store where you could also purchase a tank of gas, and a post office where a key was needed to open a little door with a glass window giving glimpse of your mail within.

Our 700 sq ft cottage was nestled within a thick forest of trees on the far side of Lake Ann, the river feeding the lake winding it's way through my yard. We hadn't any neighbors as surrounding cottages were only occupied in the summer months. It was a quiet and restful place, perfectly perfect for someone like me.

On the weekends my husband and I loved to walk through the woods that enclosed us in a quiet darkness that was all our own. The sound of leaves rustling when scuffled through a favorite sound to this day.

Each morning my husband and I would drive together into the city to our places of work. I loved this time together as the car heater slowly warmed our bodies our talk reflective on how grateful we were to live in such a place.

And how grateful I was never to have spotted Big Foot!

I love the way you weave your stories with your pictures. I take a glimpse of your beautiful creation and then hurry to read more - sometimes sad when the end comes. Your pompom bird has melted my heart tonight. I love the tiny acorns - what perfection!

Love the pom pom bird - so cute. I remember having a post office box with the little window and key to open. As a kid, it was so fun to peek in the window to see if there was mail - oh the good old days!!

I just love the little brown birdie. Something so cute about him.
Sounds like a fun place to begin a marriage.
How about this cool weather. Beats the heat.

Lake Ann sounds like my kind of place. Love your little pom birdie & so happy you didn't encounter Big Foot either! Maybe you should make a Big Foot pom pom or felt creature, then you could say that you have encountered him in your craft room:-) Have a great weekend!

Oh Elizabeth, the little brown birdie is so cute and those acorns on his jacket...you are so talented. I look at my heart often and I am amazed each time at your delicate and fine embroidery. I am so in love with my felt heart. Your lake cottage story again turned on the movie in my head as I could see you and your hubby strolling thru the leaves. Are you loving this cooler weather? I am so enjoying it. Have a lovely weekend!

Your little embroidered nuts are the perfect touch to your bird's sweet jacket. Such a fun story and piece of history. I will have to look up Lake Ann on our MI map.

I think your sweet little autumn friends WANT to see Big Foot! :) I'll keep my eyes open for them because you know, Big Foot hails from the North West! :)

The first autumn of my married life is the one that pops into my mind every year. "Firsts" sure do leave their impression, don't they? ♥

Yesterday as I was driving to my next estate sale, I started wondering about your wonderful painted cupboard. "Had E ever told us the story about how she found it or where it came from?" This morning I found a button right at the top of the page and there was the perfect story of how it was found. I could feel the excitement you must have felt when you first saw it.

Such great memories. I love to hear you talk about the past, in such loving detail. I always feel as if I'm right there. Many times, I wish more of my friends and family would reminince about the past...sadly they never seem to do such. But that makes you even all the more special to me!
Hugs,
Maureen
