Halloween Pegdoll

I was one of those "mean" Mom's who wouldn't purchase store bought Halloween costumes for her children. I would say to my children, "My brother and I had to invent our own costumes when we were your age!"

My brother was ever so grateful to our father's family in New Orleans for sending him a paper mache Mardi Gras head which he wore for countless years. As ridiculous as he looked wearing a gigantic purple moon shaped head, he did because my mother would say to us, "Invent your own costumes!" We fondly recall our Days of Trick-or-Treating as our "Purple People Eater" days, the name given to my brother's "costume".

Being the "cute" mother that I was, I also required of my children that they not wear a costume that was at all scary. "Mom, I'm so tired of being a Business Man!" my son would complain. The year the movie "Men in Black" was released, he won Best Costume for his Business Man attire.

Do you know that my son and his newlywed wife will celebrate their first anniversary on October 31st, Halloween! Their wedding was simply wonderful held on the theater stage of their college where they met the first week of school. My only requirement for their special day was that no one wear a scary costume. I am happy to say everyone was as cute as could be, even his professors!

And so my Halloween Pegdoll is Cute as Can Be with her Scardy Cat companion by her side.

So adorable-- and so sweet! I loved your stories too. When I read about your son's wedding, I actually said "Ahh..." out loud. I'm kinda' sentimental that way.

Jill

I'm the same kind of Mom, Elizabeth. I really dislike store-bought costumes and I cannot stand scarey stuff on kids...!

Thanks for sharing more of your beautiful memories and your sweet creations...I love them all.

Hope your day has been wonderful, my friend!

Just as cute as can be. I've never seen a friendlier witch trick-or-treater. Did you make that paper clay bucket? How cute is that!

Hugs...Tracy :)

Hey Sweet lady,

As usual your work is amazing. I have to tell you though, if you've gotten inspired by me to play with the paperclay........well........I've created an amazing "monster." It looks like you are going to town and having a good time with paperclay.....I love your little "bucket." I'm actually getting scared now that you shall overthrow me.........but in the best way. I would love to exchange sculpts with you sometime. Keep having fun missy!

Love ya'
Meri

Your creations are so cute! And I love the sweet memories you shared. I was one of those "mean" moms too, no bought, or scary, costumes at our house. It made for some very interesting pictures that we still laugh over today.

I love your story and how it ties into the pink (nonscary) witch you made! My children too had mostly handmade costumes growing up. My daughter is different, she's already looking at a gymboree outfit for this year for the grandbaby, but that's ok too, every Mom has their own outlook!
I just received a huge box of wonderful felt from Joggles, now I'm deciding which of your templates to turn into something cute! Thanks for the link to Joggles! Suzie

I had to make my own costumes too. I also made most of my kid's costumes.

Cute witches! I love that they are pink and not scary!

I can't remember what we did for Halloween costumes...
Your pegdoll is darling! I "made" a Scottie dog...isn't as nice as yours...but I did it :) Whip stitching is a challenge for me!
How fun to take a trip out of state! Nice photos.
Warmly,
deb :)

That is way too cute.
I thought that was N. Ind. We have gone up to Ft. Wayne many times...I told you we go for rides. If ya really want to see some scenery go to Brown County Ind. It's called the little Smokies. It's down by Seymour/Columbus Ind. a town called Little Nashville. Well worth an overnight with a camper.
If you've been over to Hocking Hills In East Central Ohio? It's better than that for shopping and scenery.

Well, she is just adorable! I will have to click on that link, Elizabeth. My birthday is Halloween, which is good, because no one in my family can say they forgot my birthday! ; )

Elizabeth, I so love visiting your blog! I've hardly done any blog commenting this summer, but I've sure been looking . . . and drooling . . . and coveting, lol!

I just love your little creations so much - it's like a magical little fairy land! And with your arthritis, too! You go, girl!

I always did my kids costumes as well as they always came up with some oddball idea....snail, bookworm, mosquito, rubik's cube, spirit of Halloween....I really had fun doing them and they always got tons of compliments on them.

Love this peg doll. She is so cute and bubbly. I'm afraid my brother and I never wore homemade costumes. We would each receive a new costume in a box...from Woolworths. My favorite was a smiling cat, that had a small slit in the mouth area, so you could just about stick your tongue out a little bit.

I'm smiling from ear to ear as I look at more of your delightful creations and imagine purple people eaters and your son saying he didn't want to be a business man again.
I'm also wondering if your mom's insistence on you creating your own costumes had anything to do with your amazing talents now?
