Lavender Dreams

I believe, if the stages of our lives were fanned before us as paint strips found at the hardware store, we would recognize immediately the colors that belonged to us and those we love. Bold colors for a father's remembered tie, riotous colors for a mother always in motion, lavender for a young girl's dreams.

My mother so carefully and lovingly decorated my childhood bedroom for the young lady she expected me to be. Gradient ruffles of lavender spilling over the edges of my bed to pool on a floor of soft blue. Furniture in white trimmed in gold, crossed gossamer hung from windows with casements in white to let in the breeze.

A bed always made and clothes neatly hung, it was as though the room itself expected me to act in a certain way.  When I left it's confines in the morning for school, it's quiet dignity seemed to cling to me as though it expected others to recognize immediately from where I came.

Homework hours and spend the nights, joyful days and heartsick worries, lavender dreams before I closed my eyes. Would True Love ever find me. My mother said it would.

When I think back now to the Courtship Days of my life, I think of the room my mother decorated especially for me. Vases of flowers and paper declarations of love, gentle manners matching my own. Someone who was looking for the occupant of a room just like mine.

  6. Your childhood bedroom sounds heavenly. My mom never really decorated our rooms :( Hmmmm....come to think of it she really doesn't decorate the house now either. I believe that the furniture in my parent's home has been arranged the same way for the past 30 years. Of course they have bought new pieces as replacements but those replacements have gone in the same spot. I, on the other hand, love to change things around and decorate. When mom comes to visit she always says "Every time I come to visit, you have changed things around."-lol. Not sure where I get this decorating bug from because both grandmas never rearranged their homes either. I love the pom pom chickie all decked out in his Easter finest. And the sweet little peg girl would look lovely in the Creative Breathing dollhouse that I have. I'll send you a check for $9 tomorrow. Have a wonderful day, Holly

  7. Awww. It sounds like your bedroom was beautiful! I can picture it perfectly. I love that kind of vintage furniture.
Decorating and keeping my bedroom clean was so important to me when I was young. It was like my own special little word.
You make it look simple to make Pom Pom birds, but it would for sure NOT be for me! I can't tell you how much I cherish the ones you sent me!
    Thanks E! :)

  8. I tried posting a comment earlier today on this piece, but Blogger was acting up. This is beautiful writing, Elizabeth. "...It was as though the room itself expected me to act in a certain way. When I left its confines in the morning for school, its quiet dignity seemed to cling to me as though it expected others to recognize immediately from where I came." That's so beautifully expressed. I love this post. ♥

  13. The bedroom of your girlhood sounds divine! My mother was Modern Millie so I had bright purple walls, bright pink shag carpet, and glow in the dark posters in my room! I also had "love" beads hanging from the door. A hippie room!

    Blessings

  14. Ooo! Loved the fanned paint chip analogy! So true!

In my early married years, Bobby would always paint the bedroom Lavender for me. :)

Love your kinky blonde hair on those girls! ♥

  15. Ohhh - I just love your stories! Your bedroom sounds so pretty. Mine...well...it was always pink...and always a mess! Just like my craftroom - always something going on! LOL! I just made a few little felt bluebirds - just stepping into the felt cuties! yeah! Thank you Elizabeth for all the inspiration - and my favorite is the little girl in red with the bluebird skirt - soooo cute!

  16. Even the reading the word 'lavender' makes me feel calm, centred and olde worlde. Its sister colour lilac evokes a similar (but slightly more romantic) emotion. Strange how this colour range has such poignancy. Beautifully written post as always. You were/are a lucky person Elizabeth! Carol :)
