Around the World - Bavaria
I have been asked several times by readers, "Whatever has happened to your Around the World Christmas Ornaments?" Since summer is my favorite time to create for the winter holidays, I thought I would share a new pattern each week with you.
By the end of summer you will have traveled the world with me through cute as can be representations of cultural costumes and stories from my childhood.
Each ornament will be made from the same basic shapes. Additional pieces will be added to create the various costumes. (Print Preview, Choose % size close to 3" across oval, Print)
FACE: Position bangs, eyes and cheeks. Using two strands floss, tack stitch eye highlights (I cut eyes by hand). Tack stitch cheeks. Outline stitch nose and mouth. Button stitch face front and back beginning by catching ear (Cheeks and ears are always same circle) Stuff with fiberfill before last stitches are taken.
Outline stitch center part on hair back. Braids are created with 1/8" strips of felt, tack at one end, braid, tack again, tie with ribbon. Button stitch back hair to back face piece (catch braids on girl), catch bang edge on face front.
HAT: Cut 2 ovals for hat brim, button stitch together. Cut 2 hat crown pieces, button stitch together catching hanging cord at top center, leave flat edge open, (Don't cut thread) stuff. Position hat crown on brim, tack stitch in place. Position hat band, tack stitch at side seam. Pink cheek pattern for feather rosette, tack stitch feather in place. Tack stitch hat to hair hiding stitches under hat band.
The inspiration for these ornaments is as old as I am and pays tribute to my father. Any time spent together was an opportunity to learn. Favorite matching games were always played while driving in our White Behemoth. Between lurches and stops he might ask of my brother and me, "Where do Polar Bears live?" or "Where would you live if you wore lederhosen?"
It didn't matter that we begged to play a game whose answers were learned the first time playing, we felt such pride in remembering anything taught to us by our father we loved so much. I can still hear his voice clearly, "Lizzie, it's your turn...."
Next week: In what country will you find Geisha?

Ahhh so cute. My favorite is the eskimo. Good time to work on winter projects............makes it not seem so hot outside.
All of your creations are adorable but the Christmas decorations are perfect. I was looking for something that I could sew by hand while I sit outside enjoying the weather. Thank you:) I look forward to your next project.
Elizabeth I just got my Thread Candy Studio magazine today and I am so excited. I think it might be a new favorite. I am doing your ornaments for Christmas gifts this year and these are perfect to add to the others of course. One thought? What do you suppose the American couple would look like? Ha! Thanks so much for sharing such a sweet ornament treat! Smiles....Renee
These are so cute - you always do such a great job.
Your little creations are absolutely adorable. Will there be a Middle Eastern set? :) Have a wonderful weekend. Tammy
Do you know what I've been thinking about lately? Your "Peppermint Christmas".
Well, I think I'm getting my mojo back and have been inspired by that Christmas cubby you made last year. I may need to try one now.
Thanks for ALWAYS inspiring!
Jill
