I was one of those "mean" Mom's who wouldn't purchase store bought Halloween costumes for her children. I would say to my children, "My brother and I had to invent our own costumes when we were your age!"
My brother was ever so grateful to our father's family in New Orleans for sending him a paper mache Mardi Gras head which he wore for countless years. As ridiculous as he looked wearing a gigantic purple moon shaped head, he did because my mother would say to us, "Invent your own costumes!" We fondly recall our Days of Trick-or-Treating as our "Purple People Eater" days, the name given to my brother's "costume".
Being the "cute" mother that I was, I also required of my children that they not wear a costume that was at all scary. "Mom, I'm so tired of being a Business Man!" my son would complain. The year the movie "Men in Black" was released, he won Best Costume for his Business Man attire.
Do you know that my son and his newlywed wife will celebrate their first anniversary on October 31st, Halloween! Their wedding was simply wonderful held on the theater stage of their college where they met the first week of school. My only requirement for their special day was that no one wear a scary costume. I am happy to say everyone was as cute as could be, even his professors!
And so my Halloween Pegdoll is Cute as Can Be with her Scardy Cat companion by her side.
So adorable-- and so sweet! I loved your stories too. When I read about your son's wedding, I actually said "Ahh..." out loud. I'm kinda' sentimental that way.

Your creations are so cute! And I love the sweet memories you shared. I was one of those "mean" moms too, no bought, or scary, costumes at our house. It made for some very interesting pictures that we still laugh over today.

I love your story and how it ties into the pink (nonscary) witch you made! My children too had mostly handmade costumes growing up. My daughter is different, she's already looking at a gymboree outfit for this year for the grandbaby, but that's ok too, every Mom has their own outlook!

ReplyDeleteI thought that was N. Ind. We have gone up to Ft. Wayne many times...I told you we go for rides. If ya really want to see some scenery go to Brown County Ind. It's called the little Smokies. It's down by Seymour/Columbus Ind. a town called Little Nashville. Well worth an overnight with a camper.
If you've been over to Hocking Hills In East Central Ohio? It's better than that for shopping and scenery.

I always did my kids costumes as well as they always came up with some oddball idea....snail, bookworm, mosquito, rubik's cube, spirit of Halloween....I really had fun doing them and they always got tons of compliments on them.

ReplyDeleteLove this peg doll. She is so cute and bubbly. I'm afraid my brother and I never wore homemade costumes. We would each receive a new costume in a box...from Woolworths. My favorite was a smiling cat, that had a small slit in the mouth area, so you could just about stick your tongue out a little bit.
