Do you ever visit a friend's blog and go EAK!!! I just have to make "one of those!" Little did I know that a Sunday visit would set the theme for Valentine's Day in my craft room.

Paula has shared a fantastical book called "The Gnome Book of Christmas Crafts". My imagination was captured right away by a cute little pillow featured. Right then and there I created a pattern for a penny rug that has surprised me with it's cuteness overload factor.

I thought I would share with you the process of creating my penny rug as I go. This is an EASY but BIG project taking hours of tedious cutting and stitching, but I am someone who loves tedious! Click on image and PRINT for full size.
Supplies: 3/4yd white felt fabric, 1/8yd red, 1/8yd blue, 1sq. flesh (squares can be used for everything but white) Floss: 5 white, 3 red, 2 blue, 1 black, 1 flesh. Button stitch and whip stitch. Flat scissors and Pinking scissors. Time on your hands!
Cutting pattern: Cut 15" white circle (Pattern can be found on "Dash Away Pattern"), Cut 15" white circle pinking close to line. Cut 13 white mushrooms, pink 13 (NOTE ABOUT PINKING - CUT AS CLOSE TO PATTERN AS POSSIBLE) Cut 13 red mushroom caps, 39 white spots. Cut 6 blue triangle bodies and arms, cut 6 hats, PINK 6 beards, 6 faces, free cut 6 hands an noses. ALL OF THIS CUTTING TAKES ABOUT AN HOUR! (laid my pieces out as in above picture to keep myself motivated, and so I wouldn't have to count!!!)

Penny Rugs all follow the same process, top to bottom. Using 2 strands white floss, button stitch white dots to mushroom caps, mushroom cap to plain cut white mushroom. Plain cut mushroom is whip stitched between "V"'s of pinked mushroom piece. NOTE: To simplify this project in some way, ALL PINKED PIECES WILL BE WHIP STITCHED.

To thank Paula Clare for her inspiration, I will be filling this box with little this and thats as I go along. I hope she will have fun seeing the box fill!

You may not take on this large project, but perhaps you will be inspired by the colors or the process in your own creativity. This is why I love this crafting community and why I love Paula Clare!!!!
Well, I will return when I finish 12 more mushrooms!

Oh E! You're KILLING ME with the cuteness of it all! I simply HAVE to have one! I will TRY my hand at felt, but I am certain I don't have the patience to finish it as you have. Tedious is NOT MY bag! However, this is so over the top wonderful I may have to make an exception!
EEK! You are AMAZING!
What fantastic ideas Elizabeth! YOu are so good helping everyone!
Hugs and Love Suex
I think you've just given me the inspiration to accomplish one of my goals for 2010...make a penny rug. The gnomes fit in so well with the whole Swedish theme here at our house. I skipped right over to half.com (my favorite book buyuing site) and found the Gnome book for $1.95 so I did order it. Fun projects for the winter for sure! I can't wait to see yours when you've completed your stitching.
Oh yes, and the gnome heart....over-the-top adorableness!
This gnomes are just too sweet. I sure wish I had some felt handie. I will have to keep this on fill.
Keeping my fingers crossed for the mail later this afternoon.....
Hugs,
Kate

It's perfect with today's theme. Vintage 60s, and the Divas.....
You made my day, I'm going to ring my bells.
Clicking on your blog creates a little fountain of wonderment--what will be there?, will she have a post?, how can she possibly maintain this level of creativity?
In awe and praise, this gnome is truly delightful.

This is a wonderful project Elizabeth. I probably won't do it but you provide such great instructions and those mushrooms are so sweet. Love it all.
