Elizabeth's Bluebirds

A sweet and easy craft, bluebirds to be given as a small token of friendship this Valentine's Day.

Supplies easily found at your local craft store.

First roll Styrofoam under the palm of your hand on craft paper to slightly flatten it's porous surface. (Note difference between head not flattened and body which has) Press more heavily to flatten bottom of body and head shapes. Use a slightly stiff brush to "scrub" paint onto surface. I mixed a little white into my paint to lighten. Set aside to dry while assembling pieces to attach
.

Accordion fold between your fingers two 15" strips of crepe paper for wings and one 2/3rds that length for tail. Pink edges as shown, make sure ends to be glued to body are all same length. 15 inch strip cut in half lengthwise and width wise. Six scallops to create flower petals. Make five total
.

Hold wing pieces closely together between fingers, hot glue into position, slightly fanning while glue is cooling. Thin bead of glue on front edge, adhere to body to give fanned shape. Glue tail feathers also slightly fanning as glue cools. Cut paper shapes for beak, and leaves. Punch black paper for eyes or use black brads.

Roses are created by slightly rolling first petal, place in center of next petal gathering bottom edge to form rose shape. When petals are in place, pinch bottom tightly between fingers. Snip off bottom of rose. While still in hand be prepared to glue in place on neck of bird.

Garlands for your bluebird can be as creative as you like. I used vintage birthday candle holders with little pearls glued inside for my blue bird. The white ribbon gives contrast to the pink bird.

One Dear Reader thought these would be cute for a wedding shower - you wouldn't have to paint! What about a little girl's birthday tea party. These could hold name tags on their plates. Tucked into a baby shower gift basket, or holding a sweet banner in a nursery. So many ideas for these sweet little bluebirds!

Thank you for posting the tut on the darling little bird. Now I must see if our one variety store here has that crepe paper. (I see you use it a lot) I'll let you know how I do and post one cute little birdie on my blog if I can get one made. Nan

Of all the things I've seen crafted, these tiny birds of yours rank up there in the top two, maybe the top one of any craft I've seen. They're sweet, adorable and I simply love them. Thank you so much for the tutorial... my goodness, what a designing talent you have..

Oh my! Oh my! You do have a tutorial for those adorable birds. I'll have to go to the craft store and get some Styrofoam balls. I can't wait to make one!!

Wow, how easy is that? So effective Elizabeth!
Your chipmunks don't look like lizards! They look like chipmunks!
I've started work on a fox now, but a panda, I never thought of that!
I don't think of myself as a designer! But I am loving my pillows!! I've started another two now, but because school starts back on Wed, I won't have nearly as much time as I have had.
Looking forward to getting to work on some peg dolls! You'll have to e-mail me some tips on creating them! I know I'll be making one with a little pet lizard though!

These are adorable! I'll definitely have to think of a reason to make one of these, or maybe no reason at all, so cute!
